WASHINGTON & OTTAWA, 14 February 2013

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) issued a joint statement of support for academic librarian Dale Askey and his employer, McMaster University.

Mr. Askey and McMaster University are the targets of a $3.5 million lawsuit by Edwin Mellen Press. ARL and CARL oppose the excessive liabilities demanded over the contents of a blog post. Both associations are committed to freedom of expression and are strongly opposed to any effort to suppress information or censor ideas.
