NEWS / NOUVELLES
Google News veut numériser les archives des journaux français
Xavier Ternisien
Le Monde, 16 janver 2009
L'intérêt pour l'information n'a jamais été aussi élevé.
De plus en plus de personnes y ont accès par Internet. On constate

Report reveals the true cost of scholarly communication
January 15, 2009
While it is no secret that scholarly communication is a massively expensive
business, actual costs have remained a mystery – until now. UK-based
Research Information Network (RIN) released a report that put global costs
at some £175bn and uncovered some surprising results. ‘Journal
publishing and distribution are pivotal, but only part of the scholarly
communications costs,’ observed Michael Jubb, RIN director. ‘Much
larger hidden costs are incurred by readers in the search for, printing
and reading of articles.’ *

Obama promet une «cyber investiture» accessible à tous
Agence France-Presse, 15 janver 2009

Responding to the global economic crisis: Don’t forget
Canada’s “Intellectual Infrastructure”
January 14, 2009
The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, a national
body representing over 50,000 researchers, scholars and students, urges
the federal government to consider increasing its investment in research
and innovation as part of any public spending program to stimulate the
economy. Federation President Nathalie Des Rosiers reminded the government
of the critical role of research and innovation to bolster short-term economic
recovery and long-term growth in a pre-budget consultation letter sent
to the Minister of Finance and opposition leaders. It is estimated that
industries that rely on the knowledge and skills generated by the arts,
humanities, and social sciences account for nearly $700 billion of Canada’s
GDP.*

OA Working Group proposes an OA mandate to the Obama transition
team
Peter Suber
Open Access News, January 13, 2009
The US Open
Access Working Group has posted an OA
proposal to the Obama transition team's Citizen's
Briefing Book. Public access to the published results
of publicly funded research will benefit the economy, science, and
health. Every year, the federal government funds tens of billions of
dollars in basic and applied research with the expectation that the
results will accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, stimulate
innovation, and improve the public good.*

Textbook piracy thriving around city's campuses
Kenyon Wallace
Toronto Star, January 10, 2009
The high cost of university textbooks in Canada is driving students and
copy shops to contravene federal copyright law, creating a thriving underground
photocopying industry. A Star investigation found 10 copy shops near the
University of Toronto and Ryerson University willing to either photocopy
full textbooks or allow customers to use self-serve copy machines before
binding the pages together – creating books as good as new at a fraction
of the cost.*

Feeding a fine hunger: good teaching is not a separate & distinct
activity from the rest of academic work.
Frank Furedi
CAUT Bulletin, January 2009
Although “teaching” experts can teach interesting and practical tricks, their training can miss the point: that academic teaching cannot be recycled as a series of distinct skills and competencies. Although teachers have to learn how to teach, not everything that has to be learnt can be taught. The “trick” is how to learn from the experience of teaching. The most important lesson one can learn is that to be successful as a teacher, one must take students seriously.* HTML
Ontario think tank zeroes in on importance of
the creative class to weathering downturn
RE$EARCH MONEY, Volume 22, Number 20, December 23, 2008
Ontario's growing concentration of workers that comprise the creative class may help the province weather the recession better than the previous economic downturn of 1991. Yet members of the creative class in Ontario are paid significantly less than their counterparts in US peer states and are used less intensively by their employers, casting doubt on the ability of Ontario cities to retain them. These and other findings are based on the latest research to emerge from the new Martin Prosperity Institute (MPI) at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management. The research is part of a project the MPI is conducting for the Ontario government, entitled Ontario in the Creative Age: Toward an Economic Blueprint.*
Obama moving science and technology to the top of nation's priority
list
RE$EARCH MONEY, Volume 22, Number 20, December 23, 2008
The US appears set to elevate the status of S&T within government and the nation as a whole with the announcement of the team that will advise president-elect Barak Obama. Citing the need for leadership and emphasizing respect for "the integrity of the scientific process", Obama is making clear that he intends to break with the current administration's inherent distrust of science and failure to heed the advice of the nation's top scientists and business leaders.

Karen Williams et al, January 2009
The Scholarly Communication Toolkit was designed by the Scholarly Communication
Committee of The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to
support advocacy efforts designed to transform the scholarly communication
landscape. The tools page presents a modest number of offerings and will
grow as librarians and others submit materials. Creators will retain copyright
to all materials accepted. Materials will be accepted by this site if the
creator agrees to allow others to copy, distribute, or modify materials
for local use, for educational purposes, with attribution.*

Academia.edu
A group of researchers has launched an online tool that displays academics
around the world in a tree format, according to what university/department
they are affiliated with, and enables them to have easy-to-maintain profiles.
Browsing profiles by research interests has also been enabled. There is
also an "Independent Researchers" portion of the tree for academics
not associated with a university.*
