- Les recteurs déplorent les priorités du gouvernement
conservateur
Clairandrée Cauchy
6 mars 2009

Researchers fear 'stagnation' under Tories
Carolyn Abraham
Globe and Mail, March 2, 2009
The lobby group that represents 65,000 staff at 121 colleges and universities,
the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), had planned to
raise concerns over the government's handling of research funding when
two of its officials met with Gary Goodyear, Minister of Science and Technology,
and his policy adviser Wesley Moore. Within moments, however, it became
clear the meeting would not be productive. “The minister was very
angry,” said David Robinson, associate executive director of CAUT. “He
was raising his voice and pointing his finger … He said everyone
loves their [federal budget] and we said, ‘A lot of our members don't
love it'… and he said, ‘That's because you're lying to them,
misleading them.'” Many in Canada’s scientific community are
disappointed, frustrated with – and even fearful of – the government's
treatment of research.*

The Polar Information Commons (PIC): Establishing the Framework
for Long-term Stewardship of Polar Data and Information
February 23, 2009
With the hugely successful International Polar Year 2007-2008 (IPY) officially
drawing to a close, it is critical to ensure that the data generated by
IPY projects are accessible and preserved for the benefit of future generations
of researchers. CODATA, the Committee on Data for Science and Technology,
is initiating a Polar Information Commons (PIC), to facilitate the process
of ensuring sustainable, long-term stewardship of and access to polar data
and information coming out of the IPY. The project: The Polar Information
Commons (PIC): Establishing the Framework for Long-term Stewardship of
Polar Data and Information aims to build on recent successful “commons” approaches
developed in other scientific fields and entraining new stakeholders and
participants into polar data management.*

Les blogs : info ou influence ?
Xavier Ternisien

It's time for Canada's digital revolution
Tom Jenkins
Globe and Mail, March 2, 2009
A revolution in digital technology continues at an incredible pace even
as the economy struggles. Although talking about the positive impact of
new technology seems out of place, there is no time like a crisis to make
investment choices that will provide jobs, create wealth into the future,
drive new productivity enhancements, and lead to global competitiveness.
There are now over 100 million handheld device users. Websites and handhelds
are migrating from newspaper-style publishing to micro television broadcast
stations and receivers. In the Waterloo, Ont., region alone, there are
more than 2,000 available jobs in the high-tech sector as layoffs across
Canada make headlines.*

An iTunes moment? The growing popularity of electronic books could
offer hope for newspapers
The Economist, February 12, 2009
Things are suddenly heating up in the obscure field of electronic books
and their associated reading devices, the best known of which is Amazon’s
Kindle. If e-readers do take off, ailing newspaper and magazine publishers
could be major beneficiaries. The print media are in a bad state—and
not only because advertising revenue always dives in recessions.*
