SUMMARY:Recap of the Bibliometrics and Research Impact Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Date: October 29\, 2026\nTime: 1:00pm-2:00pm ET \nRegistration \nJoin the CARL Bibliometrics and Research Impact Community of Practice for a recap of the Bibliometrics and Research Impact Conference that took place June 2-4\, 2026 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. The Conference organizers will provide an overview of the conference and key themes from the presentations\, which will be followed by three lightning talks by some of this year’s presenters. \nTalk 1 \n\nTitle: From Uncharted Waters to a Mapped Horizon: Building a Research Intelligence App with Power BI and Integrated Open and Institutional Data\nShort description: “At BRIC 2026\, I shared how the University of Victoria built its Research Intelligence (RI) App from the ground up. Using the Power BI platform\, the RI App brings together more than 15 open and institutional data sources\, from OpenAlex and ORCID to internal grants and HR systems\, into six dashboards used by over 100 administrators and decision makers across campus. In this lightning talk\, I will distill that story into a brief overview of the app and share our lessons learned\, including: how to integrate open and institutional data when you’re starting from siloed systems\, why Power BI can be a practical delivery platform\, how DORA and the Leiden Manifesto can help shape the design\, and how a cross-campus community of data analysts can help efforts like these take root.”\nBio: Karina Giesbrecht is a Senior Research Data Analyst at the University of Victoria and the architect of UVic’s Research Intelligence Platform. A former ocean scientist with a Ph.D. in biogeochemistry\, she now applies ecosystem thinking to research data\, guided by responsible metrics.\n\nTalk 2 \n\nTitle: Critically Evaluating the Impact of Transformative Agreements\nShort Description: “In this lightning talk\, I will (quickly) critically examine the evaluation of TAs\, (pithily) articulate some of the limitations and problems with Article Processing Charges (APC) and affiliation data\, and (briefly) suggest possible alternatives to APC-based “cost avoidance” evaluation models. I’ll also (speedily) explore approaches for assessing the broader impact of these agreements\, moving beyond narrow financial metrics toward more meaningful forms of evaluation.”\nBio: Jason Friedman is the Assistant Dean\, Collections and Discovery/Collections Strategy Librarian at the University of Saskatchewan. His research interests include contemporary changes to collections strategy\, and in particular\, the library’s role in facilitating research dissemination and knowledge production. He is a member of a multi-institutional team analyzing transformative agreements.\n\nTalk 3 \n\nTitle: Reporting Practices in Modern Bibliometric Analyses: A Review of the Most Cited Papers 2020-2024\nShort Description: “Despite the growing popularity of bibliometric analysis\, there are no widely accepted standards guiding its conduct or reporting. Through a review of the 50 most highly cited bibliometric studies from the past five years\, this project documents persistent gaps in methodological transparency and reproducibility\, including limited reporting of search strategies\, data cleaning\, and inclusion/exclusion criteria. At the same time\, the findings highlight substantial similarities in tools\, visualizations\, and research approaches\, supporting the development of a common reporting protocol.”\nBios:\n\nErin Simon is the Applied Health Science Librarian at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.\n\nBeth Blackwood is a Research & Education Librarian at Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives and the lead for Research Impact and bibliometrics.
