SUMMARY:Digital Badges & Micro-Credentials: A New Ecology of Learning for Information Literacy
DESCRIPTION:Date: November 25\, 2026\nTime: 12:00pm-1:00pm ET \nRegistration \nJoin the new Teaching and Learning Community of Practice for a session with Daniel Payne (York) on the use of digital badges and micro-credentials in information literacy instruction. Drawing on an ongoing research project with the Student Learning and Academic Success Department at York University Libraries\, Daniel will explore theoretical and practical considerations for implementing these approaches\, including their structure\, assessment\, and accreditation. Through case study examples from Canada and beyond\, he will highlight how situated learning strategies can inform curriculum design and support effective implementation. \nDaniel Payne (MLIS\, MA Musicology\, BEd) serves as Part-Time Social Sciences Librarian at York University\, Reference Archivist with The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives\, and Sunday Librarian with Toronto Public Libraries. Between 2002 and 2021\, he was Head of Reference and Instructional Services at the OCAD University Library\, where he used studio-based pedagogy to activate library services. From 2008 to 2021\, he taught Art Librarianship in Theory & Practice\, a graduate-level course he developed for the Faculty of Information\, University of Toronto. His research interests include exploring the history of art and design pedagogy as reflected through library collections and services\, using art exhibitions as information literacy platforms\, and understanding how the Mi’kmaq teaching of Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) can activate research models using Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Daniel is also principal cellist with Counterpoint Community Orchestra\, the world’s longest standing 2SLGBTQ+ orchestra.
