SUMMARY:2026 Academic Libraries’ Leadership Institute
DESCRIPTION:Date: May 30 – June 5\, 2026\nLocation: St. John’s\, Newfoundland \nFollowing two successful offerings\, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is pleased to announce the third Academic Libraries Leadership Institute (ALLI)\, taking place at Memorial University in St. John’s\, Newfoundland and Labrador. \nThe six-day cohort-style leadership program will run from May 31 to June 5\, 2026\, with an opening reception on the evening of May 30. \nDeveloped by the Gardiner Centre\, the engagement arm of the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial University\, with input from CARL directors and associate-level academic librarians\, the program has been tailored specifically for associate-level academic librarians. ALLI is designed to support emerging library leaders as they develop the skills\, confidence\, and networks needed to help lead Canada’s academic libraries into the future. \nThis rich and engaging program will enhance critical leadership capabilities\, teach valuable new skills\, and foster strong professional connections across the country. Participants will explore topics such as change management\, project management\, employee engagement\, library budgeting\, equity\, diversity and inclusion\, civil discourse\, and leadership pathways in academic libraries. The program combines lectures\, case studies\, collaborative discussions\, reflection\, and applied problem-solving exercises in a unique setting on the eastern edge of Canada. \nThe institute also includes networking and social opportunities\, including a welcome reception\, a downtown St. John’s dinner and Irish music evening\, and time to enjoy the scenic surroundings of Signal Hill. \nRegistration is capped at 30 participants. Applications from all Canadian academic libraries are welcome\, with priority given to applicants from CARL member libraries. \nNote that the program will be delivered in English\, but supporting materials will be available in both English and French in advance of the institute. \nSee the Call for Participants for more details. \nFor more information: \nSusan Cleyle\nCARL Visiting Program Officer – Leadership Development Initiatives\nscleyle@mun.ca \nJulie Hannaford\nDeputy Chief Librarian\, University of Toronto Libraries\nj.hannaford@utoronto.ca
