As Canadian memory institutions are increasingly called to preserve and give access to valuable digital materials into the future, there is a need to develop a clearer understanding of what gaps exist between available resources and growing needs in the field of digital preservation. The Canadian Association of Research Libraries’ Digital Preservation Working Group (CARL DPWG) seeks input from memory institutions across Canada on the state of digital preservation capacity and gaps in their organizations. The goal of the survey is to provide for a more accurate picture of digital preservation activities in Canada and to understand the needs of different types and sizes of institutions. Ultimately, it is anticipated that the findings will contribute to the development of strategies, policies, expertise, and resource allocation that will enable the community to build capacity and help to ensure that Canada’s valuable digital assets are preserved for future generations.
The aggregate survey results will be made available via a position paper report. All survey data will be anonymized. The survey is available at the link below and will take 30-60 minutes to complete. You may save your entries and return to the survey at any time. This survey will be open until midnight Monday, September 17, 2018.
Please note that CARL members who completed the first phase of the survey in 2017 do not need to complete it again.
A PDF version of the survey questions is available for download for consultation on areas where information may need to be gathered. The survey should ideally be completed by an individual at an organization who has oversight over digital preservation activities from the point of view of policy, technology, resources, and collections.
