CARL at 50: Celebrating Five Decades of Collaboration and Leadership

September 1, 2026 – September 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL).

Founded in 1976, CARL has spent five decades advancing research libraries in Canada through collaboration, advocacy, leadership, and collective action. Throughout its history, the association has helped shape national conversations on scholarly communication, open scholarship, research infrastructure, copyright, preservation, and many other issues important to the research library community.

To celebrate this milestone, CARL will be sharing a series of stories, milestones, photographs, memories, and reflections highlighting the people, initiatives, and accomplishments that have shaped the association over the past 50 years.

From September 2026 through January 2027, follow along as we look back on key moments in CARL’s history and reflect on the association’s ongoing role in supporting research libraries and the broader research ecosystem in Canada.

We invite members, colleagues, and friends of CARL to join us in celebrating this important anniversary.
