CARL Releases Statement on Libraries and Student AI Literacy

October 5, 2026 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has released a new statement highlighting the essential role of academic libraries in advancing student AI literacy. Drawing on their longstanding leadership in information, digital, and copyright literacy, libraries are uniquely positioned to help students navigate issues such as academic integrity, privacy, bias, authorship, and the responsible use of AI.

The statement also emphasizes that AI literacy is an essential part of preparing students for an academic and professional world increasingly shaped by AI, and that libraries are well positioned to lead these efforts on campus.
