Different Paths, Shared Purpose: Exploring Communications Practice in Academic Libraries

Date: November 10, 2026
Time: 1:00pm-2:00pm ET

Registration

Communications professionals in academic libraries arrive by many different paths. Some begin their careers as librarians and take on communications, outreach, or marketing responsibilities. Others come to libraries after working in communications roles in higher education, government, non-profit organizations, or the private sector. Some communicators support libraries while reporting to central communications, marketing, advancement, or external relations units.

This session will explore a central question: What makes communications in academic libraries different, and how do our professional experiences shape our response to that difference?

We’ll hear about the experiences of colleagues from diverse professional backgrounds and organizational contexts. We will explore how governance structures, academic culture, reporting relationships, and institutional priorities influence communications practice in research libraries.

This session will not be recorded. Automatic live captions will be available in English and French. Learn more about the Communications Community of Practice.
