Joint Statement: CARL and CRKN Affirm Ongoing Shared Commitments to Open Science
June 11, 2026 – In May 2023, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) launched Towards Open Scholarship: A Canadian Research and Academic Library Action Plan to 2025. Developed over months of close collaboration, this action plan articulated shared aims and an ambitious vision for advancing open science in Canada.
We are proud of progress achieved over the past three years and we recognize that the work of transforming the research landscape is far from complete. While both CARL and CRKN continue to work independently towards our respective goals and commitments to open science, we recognize the value and power of our collaborative efforts.
Over the coming months, CARL and CRKN will work together to lay the foundation for a renewed vision for collaborating to expand open science and drive the evolution of open knowledge in Canada. We will continue to coordinate our efforts around key areas such as the new Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications and digital research infrastructure. We are also planning a series of touchpoints to engage with our members, other key organizations in the research ecosystem, and community members. From this foundation of collaboration and engagement, we will look to develop a new roadmap to advance open science and build an open and sustainable future together.
