CARL Fund for Advancing Open Access Book Publishing

March 24, 2026 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is pleased to launch a new two-year pilot program to increase the number of open access scholarly books published by Canadian presses through research library support.

Developed by the CARL Advancing Research Committee in collaboration with the Association of Canadian University Presses (ACUP), the Canadian Association of Research Libraries Fund for Advancing Open Access Book Publishing provides funds to eligible presses to offset the costs of publishing in open access. Awards of $4,000 per book are available to all ACUP member presses submitting an eligible title. CARL is striving for broad and equitable distribution across presses of different sizes, regions, and linguistic communities, with a target of approximately 20% of funded works in French.

For more information about the program, including the selection process and eligibility criteria, please see the full program description.

This pilot reflects a shared commitment to advancing open access and strengthening Canada’s scholarly publishing ecosystem by supporting the creation and dissemination of openly available research.

Applications to the 2026 (Year 1) program will be accepted between April 1 and April 30, 2026. Interested ACUP member presses are invited to complete the application form and submit it to Elizabeth Kalbfleisch, CARL Senior Program Officer, at .
