CARL is Celebrating Open Access Week 2024!

October 21, 2024 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is excited to celebrate Open Access Week 2024, running from October 21 to 27. This year’s theme, Community over Commercialization, highlights the importance of community-driven efforts to advance Open Access in the academic research landscape.

Open Access plays a crucial role in Canadian research institutions by making scholarly work freely accessible to a global audience, fostering greater collaboration, and accelerating the advancement of knowledge. By removing barriers to information, Open Access enhances the visibility and impact of Canadian research, ensuring that it can be leveraged to address pressing societal challenges. It also supports equity in knowledge dissemination, benefiting researchers, students, and the public alike.

As part of the week’s events, CARL and Scholars Portal are co-hosting a special webinar:

Strengthening Institutional Repositories through the Scholaris Network of Experts
Date: Monday, October 21, 2024
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm ET

In this webinar, members of the Scholaris Network of Experts will share projects from the Metadata and Discovery Expert Group (S-MDEG) and the Electronic Theses and Dissertations Expert Group (S-ETEG). Since March 2024, these expert groups have been collaborating on crucial aspects of the Scholaris shared repository infrastructure, contributing to the discoverability and impact of Canadian research. See event details and webinar recording (YouTube).

Paper Pledge Project: A Global Initiative for Climate Change Research

CARL is also participating in the Paper Pledge Project, a global initiative coordinated by COAR to deposit and promote climate change research in repositories. The goal is to increase the visibility and accessibility of climate research to inform decision-making and public policy. The Canadian Repositories Community of Practice, supported by CARL, plays a key role in driving the success of this initiative. Learn more and find out how to get involved: Paper Pledge Project.
