December 17, 2019 – Reporting to the Canadian Association of Research Libraries’ (CARL) Strengthening Capacity Committee, the CARL / ABRC Competencies Working Group (CCWG) was struck in the summer of 2017 to refresh the 2010 publication, ‘Core Competencies for 21st Century CARL Librarians.’ Their objective was to review and revise the document to better reflect the current needs of the profession (see CCWG Terms of Reference for more details).
This process has been highly consultative – with opportunities for diverse library directors and staff to provide feedback along the way. The working group conducted two in-person focus groups at the OLA Superconference in Toronto and the ReAL conference in Vancouver, four virtual focus groups organized by region (Western Canada, Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic), and a survey open to academic librarians at all levels and human resources professionals.
Membership on the working group also spans varying levels of experience, and includes CARL Directors, librarians currently holding managerial responsibilities (department heads or AULs), librarians with 4-10 years of experience currently working in a non-managerial capacity, and a newer librarian with less than 4 years experience.
