Susan Haigh Honored with Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship

February 5, 2025 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is proud to announce that Susan Haigh, CARL’s Executive Director, has been awarded the prestigious Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship. This national award was presented at the 2025 Ontario Library Association (OLA) Conference in Toronto.

The Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on public awareness and appreciation of the profession (see https://culc.ca/advocacy/awards/).

Susan Haigh was recognized for her exceptional leadership in advocacy, her achievements in connecting academic libraries, her contributions to open science and publishing, and her leadership in driving national initiatives forward.

In the remarks delivered by Michelle Arbuckle, Executive Director of OLA at the ceremony, CARL President Brett Waytuck (Dean, University Libraries and Archives, University of Regina) praised Susan’s tireless advocacy, skilled leadership, and role in strengthening Canada’s research library community. Mary-Jo Romaniuk, CARL Vice-president/President Elect (Vice Provost, Libraries and Cultural Resources, University of Calgary) highlighted Susan’s ability to bring diverse viewpoints together, fostering trust and advancing the profession. Past CARL Presidents Donna Bourne-Tyson (former Dean of Libraries at Dalhousie University) described her as an astute, collaborative, and strategic leader who embodies the profession’s core values of integrity, vision, and inclusivity, while Jonathan Bengtson (University Librarian at the University of Victoria) emphasized the profound national and international impact of Susan’s leadership across multiple areas of Canada’s research landscape.

This well-deserved honor highlights Susan’s commitment to advancing the library community and the positive impact she has had on the profession at the national and international levels. CARL extends its heartfelt congratulations to Susan on this achievement.
