September 12, 2024 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is the national voice of Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries and two federal institutions. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education.
CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of Open Science. The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week for a period of at least one year. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2024.
A Visiting Program Officer is a loan from their home institution for typically one year at a minimum of 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from leadership engagement in national initiatives; while for CARL and its members, the position advances a strategic common priority.
Description
In 2023, CARL and CRKN released Towards Open Scholarship: A Canadian Research and Academic Library Action Plan to 2025, advancing a multi-pronged library approach to the development and implementation of open science policy and practices. To further these goals, and in anticipation of the new tri-agency policy on publications, we are inviting a Canadian research librarian with professional interest and broad-based expertise in Open Science to join CARL as Visiting Program Officer.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with CARL’s full-time Program Officer supporting the Advancing Research Committee’s initiatives, the VPO will take a leading role in a suite of open science initiatives as they relate to diamond and green OA models, the network of institutional repositories, and a more integrated approach with research data management, as well as working with a broad base of Open Science stakeholders beyond the library community.
The VPO for Open Science is invited to attend the CARL Advancing Research Committee meetings and works in collaboration with a CARL Senior Program Officer under the direction of CARL’s Executive Director.
