Call for Peer Mentors to Deliver the 2025 CARL Librarians’ Research Institute

November 21, 2024 – CARL is seeking applications for Peer Mentors to deliver the 2025 Librarians’ Research Institute (LRI) at the University of New Brunswick from June 16-19, 2025. Please note that LRI 2025 will be delivered in English.

The Institute helps increase research capacity for Canadian academic librarians and develops relationships among Canadian librarian-researchers. These are essential for the development and promotion of Canadian librarians’ research activities.

Position Details:

Typically, five Peer Mentors are required to effectively deliver the LRI. Peer Mentors will help work toward CARL’s goal of building research capacity for Canadian academic librarians by Canadian academic librarians. The Committee welcomes and encourages Peer Mentor applications from previous LRI participants.

Peer Mentors will possess the following:

  • Significant research experience such as being lead researcher for at least one research project.
  • Demonstrated track record in research and scholarship indicating multiple instances of peer-reviewed dissemination, and knowledge of quantitative, qualitative, or theoretical research approaches.
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills.
  • An understanding of library research and academic libraries in Canada.
  • A commitment to building a strong research culture for Canadian academic librarians.

Peer Mentors will:

  • Be involved in planning and refining content for the Librarians’ Research Institute.
  • Actively participate in delivering the LRI content, by means of panel discussions, short presentations, and small group discussions.
  • Provide LRI participants with strategies to take their current research projects to the next level.
  • Meet with LRI participants for individual consultations.

Time leading up to the LRI will be spent working with other Peer Mentors to refine topics for panel discussions, short presentations, and small group discussions. The success of the LRI will depend on the Peer Mentors’ diverse areas of expertise and, while the program has been very well defined, input will be sought in the planning process to further refine a thorough and varied curriculum for participants. The anticipated time commitment would be approximately five to ten hours per month from January to June. The LRI is offered over four days and Peer Mentors’ time will be fully devoted to the LRI for those days, as well as for a half-day of on-site preparation immediately before the LRI.

Benefits of being a Peer Mentor

  • Actively engage in the Canadian academic research landscape
  • Help to grow a community of practice for Canadian researcher-librarians
  • Travel, accommodation and meal expenses to attend the LRI are covered by CARL
  • Sharing of expertise and ideas with other practicing librarians

  • Peer Mentors are likely to also feel energized and inspired in their own research by the LRI atmosphere
