July 31, 2025 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) is pleased to share the results of its very first Communities of Practice (CoP) Impact Survey. This report confirms that Communities of Practice within the Canadian research library community are fostering collaboration, facilitating meaningful knowledge exchange, and supporting ongoing professional development across the country.
Since their establishment, these member-led Communities of Practice have become vital spaces where research library professionals connect, share expertise, and collectively address common challenges. The survey results highlight the significant positive impact these groups have had on strengthening professional networks and encouraging innovation in library services and practices.
In addition to these successes, the report also identifies important opportunities for growth, particularly in enhancing bilingualism and refining engagement strategies to better meet the diverse needs of members. CARL is committed to using these insights to support the continued evolution of these communities, ensuring they remain inclusive, dynamic, and responsive to the evolving landscape of research libraries.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the survey. Your thoughtful input and perspectives are invaluable as we work together to shape the future of Canada’s research library community.
